BOX SCORE: Sonoma State 3, Cal State L.A. 1
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State volleyball team rolled to its eighth consecutive win on Saturday night, knocking off Cal State L.A. 3-1 (25-15, 20-25, 25-20, 25-16) at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. With the win, the Seawolves remain unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at 7-0, the best conference start in school history. They are now 10-2 overall. The Golden Eagles fall to 5-6, 2-4 CCAA.
Freshman
Regan Richert had a big night for the Seawolves, pounding home a career-high 14 kills against just two errors in 25 attempts for a sparkling .480 hitting percentage. As a team, the Seawolves kept up their efficient hitting, posting a .322 mark, including a .500 percentage in the fourth set.
Sonoma State got out to a promising start in set one, lead 13-6 in the early going before cruising to a ten-point victory. The tables would turn in the second, however, as the Golden Eagles went on an 8-3 run midway through to build up a lead that proved too much in the 25-20 CSULA victory.
That 25-20 score would show up again in the third set, but this time it was Sonoma on top. After the score volleyed back and forth through the first part of the set, the Seawolves gained control with some dominating hitting by
Ally Sather,
Brooke Moore,
Kelsey Hull, and
Keala Peterson.
It looked like the fourth set would be all Sonoma State after they charged to a 9-3 lead. The Golden Eagles, however, would not go home quietly, as they put together an 8-2 run of their own to knot the score at 11. From there, the Seawolves would pull away, outscoring Cal State L.A. 14-5 down the stretch.
Peterson and Sather joined Richert with 14 kills in an all-around effort that saw the Seawolves boast four double-digit hitters (Hull added ten).
Hayley Ross was superb all evening at setter, dishing out 47 assists. Peterson led the way with 14 digs, followed closely by 13 from
Nicole Gragnola.
Natalia Gonzalez led all players with 15 kills for Cal State L.A.. Reanna Hill added ten kills and Kaylynne Taeatafa posted 42 assists and 14 digs, both team-highs.
The Seawolves will now turn their sights to their biggest home weekend of the year as a pair of nationally-ranked foes come to town in No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino (11-0, 6-0 CCAA) and No. 10 UC San Diego (9-1, 5-1 CCAA).
