BOX SCORE CARSON, Calif- Trailing by 11 points with 5:48 left in the game, the Sonoma State women's basketball team made a furious comeback, scoring 10 unanswered points over a span of four minutes to cut the lead to one, but Cal State Dominguez Hills hit a pair of free throws down the stretch and a last-second shot by
Alysa Ito rimmed off the back of the iron, giving the Toros a 43-40 win on Friday night at the Torodome in Carson. The Seawolves fall to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the CCAA while the Toros, who snapped a 10-game losing streak, improved to 2-12 (1-6 CCAA).
The Seawolves did not allow a point from the field in the final six minutes; the last Toro basket came at the 6:05 mark on a layup by Ashley Hudson. A couple of free throws put Cal State Dominguez Hills up 41-30 with 5:48 left, but that's when Sonoma State began its comeback. A couple of layups by
Bronte Sheahan and a free throw by
Marie Sweet closed the gap to six points (41-35). On SSU's next possession,
Aly Henington nailed a three pointer to cut the deficit to three at 41-38 with 3:39 remaining on the clock.
Neither team would score a point during the next couple of minutes, but a jumper by Henington at the 1:11 mark ended the drought and Sonoma State trailed by one point at 41-40. The Seawolves' defense held strong on the next two Toro possessions and with 13 ticks on the clock,
Aly Conway drew a foul and went to the free throw line for the potential go-ahead shots. However, the attempts bounced in and out and CSUDH continued to hold the narrow one-point advantage.
On the ensuing Toro possession, Ito fouled Lyndsay Heard, who converted both free throws and gave Cal State Dominguez Hills a 43-40 lead. With eight seconds left, Sonoma State took the ball down the floor and Ito found the open shot, but as the buzzer sounded, the ball bounced off the back of the rim, snapping the CSUDH 10-game skid.
For Sonoma State,
Jaclyn Bisordi led the way with nine points, all of which came in the first 20 minutes of the ball game. Sheahan chipped in with seven points while Conway and Henington added five apiece. As a team, the Seawolves shot 39.0 percent from the floor (16 of 41) and hit only 33.3 percent of their shots from the charity stripe (6 of 18).
Cal State Dominguez Hills got 12 points from Heard, but the Toros converted on just 29.4 percent from the floor (15 of 51), including only 1 of 10 from beyond the arc. Both teams combined for 42 turnovers, 22 of which came from CSUDH.
It was all Seawolves to start the game, as the visitors led 12-5 early. SSU continued to hold the advantage, going up 19-14 on a
Taylor Vigil jumper at the 3:30 mark, but CSUDH scored six of the last eight points to cut the Sonoma State halftime lead to just one at 21-20.
Sonoma State will look to regroup on Saturday when it travels to Cal State L.A. to face the Golden Eagles at 5:30 p.m. in the Eagles Nest.
