SEASIDE, Calif. -- Steven Warne fired a seven-over-par 223 to finish in a tie for 12th place with five other golfers, leading the Sonoma State men's golf team to a sixth place finish at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational that took place at Bayonet Golf Club in Seaside, Calif. this week. The Seawolves recorded a 908 (+44) and finished 34 strokes behind team champion and host Cal State Monterey Bay (874; +10).
Warne carded rounds of 72, 75 and 76, finishing 11 shots back of individual medalist Ben Taylor of Nova Southeastern, who shot a 212 (-4) for the tournament, three swings better than runner-up Chris Herzog of Cal State East Bay (215; -1).
Blake Basham tied for 24th with scores of 78-72-76--226 (+10),
Brandon Lee (75-76-79--230; +14) tied for 36th,
Matt Medeiros (77-79-76--232; +16) tied for 40th and
Kyle Listar (81-76-80--237; +21) tied for 59th.
Cal State Monterey Bay overcame a three-shot deficit heading into the third and final round to defeat second-place Nova Southeastern (878; +14) by four shots. Western Washington finished third with a team score of 897 (+33), followed by St. Edward's (898; +34) in fourth, Cal State East Bay (904; +40) in fifth and Sonoma State in sixth in the 17-team tournament. UC San Diego (910; +46), Barton College (911; +47), Grand Canyon (911; +47) and Cal State Stanislaus (916; +52) rounded out the Top 10.
Sonoma State will now take a four-month hiatus from competition for the winter before returning to action at the Cal State San Bernardino Intercollegiate in San Bernardino, Calif. on Feb. 26-27, 2013.
