BOX SCORE Minnesota State 75, Sonoma State 68 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Patrick Scott scored a game-high 28 points on 11 of 14 shooting, but the Sonoma State men's basketball team suffered a 75-68 loss to visiting Minnesota State in SSU's 2012-13 season opener on Friday night at the 12th Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic, presented by Sonoma State Enterprises. The Seawolves (0-1) had just one other player score in double-figures -- 12 points from the hands of
Will Olsem, all from beyond the three-point arc -- while the Mavericks, who had four players with 10 or more points, improved to 2-0.
In the opening game of the Logsdon Classic, Dominican (CA) outlasted San Francisco State, 115-110, in an epic, three-overtime thriller that pushed back the start time of the SSU/MSU game by an hour and 15 minutes. It didn't seem to slow the excitement of the season-opener for the Seawolves as they jumped out to a 10-point lead at 18-8 just five minutes into the contest. However, the Mavericks began to chip away and SSU's 10-point lead, which was its largest of the night, diminished rather quickly. MSU went on a 7-0 run to cut its deficit to three points at 18-15, then at the 8:02 mark, the Mavericks would snatch their first lead of the night at 28-26 on a layup by Jarvis Williams.
Sonoma State would come back to knot the game on four different occasions and even took back the lead on a three-pointer by
Jason Walter at the 3:37 mark of the first half, but on Minnesota State's ensuing possession, Williams converted another layup and the Mavericks never trailed again. The Seawolves, who trailed 41-40 at halftime, knotted the game at 42-42 on a
Justin Herold layup at 18:28 of the second period, but from then on, the Mankato Mavs took the lead and would never relinquish it, although SSU never trailed by more than nine points (the nine-point MSU lead came with 31 ticks left on the clock).
It was the glass that Sonoma State couldn't control; the Seawolves were outrebounded 38-26, including 14-8 on the offensive end. Both teams shot particularly well -- 48.3 percent on 28 of 58 from the floor for Minnesota State and 44.6 percent on 25 of 56 attempts (including 10 of 19 from long range) -- but the Mavericks did damage in the paint, scoring 42 of their 75 points below the basket.
In addition to the 40 combined points from Scott and Olsem, Herold came off the bench to add seven, followed by
Steve Lackey with six and Walter with five.
For Minnesota State, Williams netted a team-high 14 points, Zach Monaghan dropped in 11 and both Connor O'Brien and Assem Marei chipped in with 10 apiece. Williams also collected a double-double with a game-high 10 boards in the Mavs' win on Friday night.
Sonoma State will play in the fourth and final game of the Ron Logsdon Classic on Saturday when it plays host to Dominican at 7:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den. Two games will precede the SSU/DUC matchup on Saturday, beginning with the SSU women's basketball season-opener at 3:00 p.m. against the University of Mary. Then, San Francisco State will play Minnesota State at 5:30 p.m.
