ROHNERT PARK, Calif.- Reigning WWPA Player of the Week
Bridgette Souza scored three goals, but it wouldn't be enough as Sonoma State dropped a 10-8 decision to 20th-ranked CSU Bakersfield on Saturday morning at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves gave a nationally-ranked opponent all they could handle for the second straight match, but in the end fell to 4-10, 2-3 WWPA on the season. The Roadrunners improve to 5-6, 4-0 WWPA.
Saturday morning's result against the 'Runners was reminiscent in many ways of last Sunday's 8-6 loss to No. 13 UC Davis. Again, the Seawolves showed they can play with the top teams in the nation.
Trailing 1-0 in the first period, Souza struck for a pair of goals less than a minute apart to hand the Seawolves an early 2-1 lead. Though Sonoma wouldn't lead again, they'd stay close to the 'Runners throughout.
After a goal with two seconds left in the half made it 7-5 at the break, the Seawolves and 'Runners played even in the third period, with each side scoring twice.
Trailing 10-8 in the final minute, the Seawolves had a chance for a late rally thwarted when a shot glanced off the top of the cage and went directly down, only to be grabbed by the CSUB goalkeeper.
In addition to the three goals from Souza,
Alexa May and
Lindsay Rangel each posted two. Ariel Lockhsaw played well in goal, making 13 saves and keeping her team in the match.
CSU Bakersfield got two goals from Jessica Browning, Sam Shead, and Taylor Hanson.
Up next for Sonoma State is a match with another nationally-ranked opponent, No. 19 UC San Diego, on Friday March 2nd.
