ROHNERT PARK, Calif.
-- Spencer Heller worked her way up the individual leaderboard with a two-over-par 74 in Tuesday's final round, but fell just two strokes of medalist honors, placing second in the two-day Sonoma State Women's Golf Spring Invitational held at the north course of Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves also came up short, but by only one shot to finish second behind team champion Grand Canyon.  In fact, the top five teams finished just one stroke back of each other to complete the 36-hole event.

Heller (151), who brought in a 77 after Monday's opening round, moved up six places with Tuesday's round of 74, finishing two strokes back of individual medalist Chaney Uhles (74-75--149) of Central Oklahoma.  It was Heller's eighth Top Five finish in 10 events this season.  Samantha Balanon (77-79) was even with Heller after 18 holes, but dropped to ninth place with a total score of 156.  McKayla Kennedy (80-78-158) finished tied for 10th place, Chelsa Helget-Robinson (80-80--160) came in at 19th and Zoei Zbaraschuk (86-80--166) placed 39th in the field of 52 participants.

Brittani Markowski played as an individual (along with three other SSU golfers) and matched her teammate (Kennedy) with a pair of identical rounds (80-78), tallying 158 strokes in 36 holes.  Alison Ross shot an 87-84--171 to place 42nd, Sara Yarmer (84-94--178) came in at 46th and Nicole Arends (105-94--199) finished 49th.

Grand Canyon (624) won the team title by one stroke over host Sonoma State (625), followed closely behind by Central Oklahoma (626), Newman University (627) and the University of British Columbia (628).  Cal State Monterey Bay (634) finished sixth, Hawai'i-Hilo (643) seventh, Cal State East Bay (661) eighth and Dominican (830) ninth.

Placing in the Top Three six times in its 10 tournaments in 2011-12, Sonoma State will look to continue its success next week at the CSUMB Otter Invitational at Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside (Apr. 16-17).  It will serve as the final tune up before the NCAA Super Regional on May 6-8 at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
