Seawolves End Regular Season With Split At The Bronco

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Adrienne Bisharat and Brittny Hummel added three goals to their weekend total, leading the Sonoma State women's water polo team to a day-two split at the Santa Clara Invitational.  The Seawolves went up against CSU Bakersfield in their first game of the day, losing 9-5.  SSU would win game two of the day against Cal State San Bernardino, 10-9.  Sonoma State moves to 9-20 on the season and 5-10 in WWPA play.

Game 1:  CSU Bakersfield 9, Sonoma State 5

Five different Seawolves scored a goal in the early morning game against the Roadrunners, but it wouldn't be enough offense as Sonoma State fell to CSUB, 9-5.

Sonoma State scored the first goal of the game at the 5:59 mark of the first quarter on a shot from Brittny Hummel, her fourth score of the weekend.  CSU Bakersfield tied it at 1-1 just 67 seconds later on a shot from Victoria Cavaldoro.

From there on the Seawolves would be outscored 8-4, eventually taking the loss, 9-5.  Natalie Del Carlo, Caitlin Risden, Lindsay Rangel, Hummel and Bisharat all had one goal in the loss.  Ariel Lockshaw was in the cage for SSU and made 10 stops, in addition to five steals.

Game 2:  Sonoma State 10, Cal State San Bernardino 9

Two more goals for Bisharat and Hummel led the Seawolves to a one-goal win over Cal State San Bernardino, 10-9.

Sonoma State trailed 3-1 after the first quarter, but Bisharat would score back-to-back goals to knot the score at 3-3 at beginning of the second quarter.  SSU rallied off three more goals to end the second quarter, taking a 6-3 lead into the intermission.

The second half would be a back and forth battle, but the three-goal lead would prove to be enough for the Seawolves to hold on for the victory, despite the fact that they were outscored 6-4 in the second half.

For SSU, Alexa May, Rangel, Bisharat and Hummel all had two goals in the match.  Nicole Browning and Del Carlo contributed one goal to the Seawolves' victory.  Ariel Lockshaw made six saves in her start in the cage.

Sonoma State will not play for two weeks until they travel down to La Jolla for the WWPA Championship Tournament, beginning on Friday (Apr. 27).  The tournament schedule and seeds have yet to be determined.  More information regarding the WWPA tournament, hosted by UC San Diego, can be found by clicking here.
