Seawolves Fall To Tritons In First Round Of WWPA Tournament

LA JOLLA, Calif.— Bridgette Souza and Colette Reid each had two goals in the first game of the WWPA Conference Tournament for the Sonoma State women's water polo team, in a 12-7 loss to UC San Diego.  The loss puts the Seawolves in a tight spot, as one more loss will eliminate them from the tournament.

SSU came out with their eye on the prize, scoring the match's first two goals, taking a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.  Souza scored her first goal since March 17th at the 1:57 mark of the first quarter, giving Sonoma State a 3-1 lead.  However, UCSD scored two quick goals to knot the score at 3-3 after the first period.  The Tritons went on to outscore the Seawolves 3-1 in the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.

UC San Diego came out of halftime looking to put the match out of reach, scoring three goals in the third quarter to take a five goal lead, 9-4.  After a scoreless third quarter, Sonoma State came back to score three goals in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as UC San Diego matched that with three goals of its own to take the first round victory, 12-7

Alexa May, Lindsay Rangel, and Malina Lorring each had one goal, in addition to Souza's and Reid's two goals for the Seawolves.  For the Tritons, Lindsay Holbrook tallied a hat trick, while Katherine Biehle and Kirsten Bates netted two goals in the victory.  Hannah Guthman, Jessica Tran, Leah Gonzalez, and Rachel Brooks contributed one goal for the Tritons.  Ariel Lockshaw started in the cage for SSU, and had nine saves, along with a steal.

Sonoma State will match-up against Cal State San Bernardino in a consolation match Sunday (Apr. 28), starting at 12:00 p.m.
