FINAL RESULTS
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Brandon Lee carded an even-par 72 in Tuesday's third and final round of the 41st Annual Western Washington University Viking Men's Golf Invitational, bringing his three-round total to 219, good enough to finish tied for 13th in the field of 63 golfers and lead Sonoma State to a fifth place finish to start the 2012-13 season. The Seawolves fired an 879 as a team and finished just one stroke back of fourth-place Grand Canyon (878). Western Washington captured its own tournament title, carding an 848, 17 shots better than second-place British Columbia.
Lee, a true freshman out of Alpharetta, Ga., fired rounds of 74, 73 and 72 to finish three-over-par for the week on the par-72, 6,561-yard course at Bellingham Golf and Country Club. Sophomore
Eric Ash (Loomis, Calif.) would come in two strokes behind Lee after carding 76, 70 and 75 (221) in the 54-hole event, tying for 21st place. True freshman
Matt Medeiros (72-73-78--223) from Petaluma, Calif., tied for 29th, senior
Steven Warne (79-73-72--224) overcame a tough first round to finish tied for 31st and sophomore
Kyle Listar (73-77-76--226) recorded two more strokes than Warne to place himself in a tie for 38th.
Western Washington's Mark Stickland took home medalist honors, shooting a seven-under-par 209 for the tournament, holding off co-runners-up Josh Zhang (210) of British Columbia and Mark Geddes (210) of Grand Canyon by one shot. The Vikings' Jake Webb and Sandy Vaughan tied four fourth with scores of 211 to round out the top five.
WWU snapped a five-year string of not winning its own title with force, shooting a 16-under-par 848 as a team. British Columbia placed second at one-over-par 865, followed closely behind by third-place Hawaii-Hilo at 867. Grand Canyon (878) and Sonoma State (879) came in at fourth and fifth, respectively, while Saint Martin's shot just one stroke more than SSU at 880 to finish sixth. Simon Fraser (885), Dixie State (887), Concordia, Ore. (892), Cal Baptist (921), Academy of Art (926) and Northwest Nazarene (927) came in at seventh through 12th places, respectively.
Sonoma State, which was receiving votes in the preseason Golf World/Nike Golf Division II College Coaches' Poll released in August, will compete at the Golf World Invitational next Monday and Tuesday in Sunriver, Ore.
