Golden Eagles Fly Away Late For 62-53 Win Over Seawolves

BOX SCORE Cal State L.A. 62, Sonoma State 53 -- Box Score

ROHNERT PARK --
A layup by Will Olsem with 1:42 left in regulation tied the game at 53-53, but a share of missed scoring opportunities by the Sonoma State men's basketball team down the stretch allowed visiting Cal State L.A. to end the night on a 9-0 run -- seven points by way of the free throw line -- and earn the 62-53 victory over the host Seawolves on Friday at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.  Sonoma falls to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the CCAA, while the Golden Eagles move to 7-4 (4-3 CCAA).

Patrick Scott, who came into the ballgame as the CCAA's scoring co-leader with CSULA's James Tillman at 17.5 points per game, tied Tillman in the game with 15 points to lead all scorers; both remain atop the conference's scoring list at 17.3 per contest.  Olsem chipped in with 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting, including 2 of 6 from beyond the three-point arc.  Justin Herold finished the night with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.  The Seawolves shot 44.4 percent as a team (20-45), including 3 of 11 from long range, and a dismal 10 for 21 (47.6 percent) from the free throw line.

While the Seawolves and Golden Eagles never led by 10 or more points at any point of the game, Cal State L.A. had the opportunity to take a much larger lead throughout the night based the number of second chances it was given.  CSULA outscored SSU just 8-0 in second-chance tallies, but the Golden Eagles crashed the boards all evening, both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, outrebounding the Seawolves 38-21, including 11-4 on the offensive glass.

The visitors did control the paint, netting 34 of their 62 points within close range of the bucket.  In fact, CSULA scored 58 of their 62 total points either in the paint or at the free throw line (24 of 28 from the charity stripe).  From the floor, the Golden Eagles were 19 of 44 (43.2 percent), but 0 for 8 on long range attempts.  Jordan Richard dropped in 13 points and recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds.  Solomon Singer led all players with 12 boards.

The game featured 13 ties and eight lead changes and the final tie/lead change would come in favor of Cal State L.A.  Tied at 53-53 with 1:42 left, a free throw by Willie Trimble, then a layup by Joshua Munzon, followed by six consecutive made free throws by Trimble, Munzon and Tillman over the final 72 seconds sealed the victory for the Golden Eagles.

Sonoma State will look to rebound on Saturday when it plays host to Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den.
