BOX SCORE UC San Diego 85, Sonoma State 65 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The UC San Diego Tritons nailed 13 three-pointers on their way to an 85-65 win over Sonoma State on Saturday evening in CCAA men's basketball action at The Wolves' Den. Six of those threes came from Tyler McGrath, who finished with a game-high 32 points on the night, as the Tritons, now 6-9, 5-7 CCAA, won for the fourth time in their last five outings. Sonoma State falls to 6-10, 4-8 CCAA.
Despite the ugly final score, the game was quite close for most of the first twenty minutes. In fact, the Seawolves led early on, going up by as many as seven at 10-3 just over four minutes in, before the Triton long-range shooters heated up. Four quick treys turned a 10-3 deficit into a 17-12 lead for the Tritons over a three-minute stretch, in the process setting the tone for the evening.
The Seawolves would slice the lead to one on several occasions, but the Tritons, on the strength of seven three-pointers, built it back to seven, at 38-31, by the halftime break.
Coming out of the locker room, the Seawolves again trimmed away at the lead. A layup by
Justin Herold and a three-pointer by
Patrick Scott narrowed the gap to 38-36 with 18:20 left.
However, once more, UCSD dialed long distance for the answer. Threes by Ryan Peters, Drew Dyer, and McGrath quickly swelled the lead to 12 with 14:30 remaining.
Sonoma would draw within six with 12:46 to go, but that's as close as it would get, as the Tritons cruised late, outscoring the Seawolves 32-18 over the final 12 minutes.
McCrath finished 10-of-15 from the field and 6-of-9 from three-point territory on his way to 32. Drew Dyer also nailed five three-pointers to finish with 19 points and James McCann dished out nine assists. Justin Brue had a nice game off the bench, nearing a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Tritons shot 54.7% from the field and 54.2% (13-for-24) from three-point territory, in the game.
Sonoma State got a game-high 22 points from the conference's leading scorer,
Patrick Scott, but it simply wasn't enough.
Will Olsem added 13 and
Justin Herold had 11 off the bench.
The Seawolves actually out shot the Tritons, percentage-wise, as they finished at 55.3%. However, they were just 38.5% from long range and 50% from the charity stripe.
UC San Diego's 13 made three-pointers were the most tallied by a Sonoma State opponent since Cal State Monterey Bay hit 14 on 1/15/11.
Sonoma State will hit the road next week to take on Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay. They return home on February 8th to face Cal State Stanislaus. The next night, against rival Chico State, is Pack The Den Night.
