Will Olsem, the Sonoma State men's basketball team got a taste of its own medicine on Friday night, surrendering 11 three-pointers as host Chico State shot its way to a huge 82-65 victory over the visiting Seawolves at Acker Gymnasium in Chico. Sonoma falls to 4-5 this season and 2-3 in CCAA action. With the win, the Wildcats move above .500 in conference play at 3-2 (6-3 overall).
The Seawolves shot 50 percent from the floor (21-42), but only connected on 5-of-14 from beyond the three-point arc when the Wildcats went for 30-of-54 from the hardwood (55.6 percent), nailing 11-of-23 from long range.
It was all Chico State from start to finish. The hosts jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Scott cut the Seawolf deficit to two points at 5-3 with a three-pointer at the 18:06 mark. However, Amir Carraway spearheaded an 8-0 Wildcat run that eventually stretched to a 23-6 run over the next 10 minutes to lead the Seawolves by as much as 19 points at 28-9.
Sonoma State would begin chipping away at the Chico State lead, however, coming to within eight points at 32-24 on the tailend of a 15-4 run. Both teams would trade baskets, but the Wildcats closed out the half on a 7-1 run to lead 43-29 at half. It ended a dismal shooting performance in the first 20 minutes by SSU, as the team shot just 34.8 percent from the floor on 8-of-23 (3-for-8 from three-point range). Chico State, meanwhile, drained 51.9 percent of its shots in the opening period (14-27), including a 6-of-14 effort from deep.
In the second period, the Seawolves would come out on fire, hitting 13 of their 19 attempted shots in the second half (68.4 percent), but the Wildcats would be just as efficient, connecting on 16 of 27 shots from the floor for a solid 59.3 percent, including 5-of-9 from the arc, keeping Sonoma trailing by no less than 12 points the rest of the way.
While Scott and Olsem combined for 29 points on 8-of-15 shooting, no other Sonoma State player scored more than seven points.
Jabri Jenkins,
Justin Herold and
Steve Lackey were held to seven points apiece, while
Brandon Glanz added five. Scott's 16 points and five rebounds were team-highs.
Chico State was led by Rashad Parker, who was one of four Wildcats in double-figures, leading the way with 17 points. Jordan Semple had 13, followed by 10 each by Carraway and Sean Park.
Sonoma State will look to rebound on Saturday when it heads south to take on Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
