BOX SCORE #12 Sonoma State 3, Cal Poly Pomona 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-11) -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Caylie Seitz exploded for 17 kills and hit .421 as the 12th-ranked Sonoma State volleyball team cruised to a three-set victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night in The Wolves' Den. The Seawolf victory gave 12th-year head coach
Bear Grassl his 200th career victory as Sonoma won its seventh straight match -- and its fifth straight via sweep -- improving to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the CCAA. The Broncos, meanwhile, fall to 4-12 (2-6 CCAA).
Seitz committed just one error in 38 attacks, slamming 17 kills to the floor to lead all players; she was the only player on either team to record kills in double-figures.
Hayley Ross handed out 21 assists and also had a match-high 16 digs.
Madelyn Densberger and
Kelsey Hull each added nine kills as well.
The first set would prove to be the toughest for the Seawolves as it featured 11 ties and four lead changes. In fact, the Broncos rallied to come within a point at 24-23 late in the frame, but a kill from
Ashley Robinson out of the SSU timeout put the home squad up 1-0 in the match. The Broncos came out firing in the second set, but the Seawolves began to find their dominating rhythm and eventually won the set 25-20. Cal Poly Pomona stayed close at the start of the third set, but Sonoma State began to heat up again and pulled away with a convincing 25-11 win, scoring nine of the set's final 10 points to clinch the match victory.
Alexa Hasen and Lauren Jones led the Broncos with seven kills apiece, but the team hit just .059 (30k-23e-119a). Both Zoe Herrera and Brianna Thierjung recorded 13 digs while Christen Williams had four blocks, three for solo rejections.
Sonoma State looks to extend its seven-match win streak when it takes the floor on Saturday against Humboldt State. First serve is set for 7:00 pm in The Wolves' Den.
