BOX SCORE Sonoma State 87, Cal State East Bay 70 -- Box Score

HAYWARD, Calif. --
Will Olsem drained a career-high 40 points on 14 of 18 shooting, including 9 of 12 from beyond the three-point arc, and Patrick Scott went over 1,000 career points as the Sonoma State men's basketball team cruised past Cal State East Bay, 87-70, on Friday night at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward.  The Seawolves improve to 7-10 overall and 5-8 in the CCAA.  The Pioneers fall to 5-12 (4-9 CCAA).

It was 375 days since Olsem broke the program's mark for most three-pointers in one game, and Friday night, the shots were dropping for Olsem just as they were in San Bernardino on Jan. 21, 2012 when he nailed 12 three's and ended with 38 points.  He was just as dominant, no matter where he was on the floor against Cal State East Bay, accounting for almost half of the team's 87 points on Friday.

Olsem's 40 points were the most scored by an SSU player in nearly 23 years and the third-highest total in school history.  Todd Blakely had 45 in 1990 and Ramon Soloman went for 42 in a game in 1970.

Meanwhile, Scott became the 13th player in program history to top 1,000 career points, scoring 12 against the Pioneers on 5 for 10 shooting from the hardwood.  He now has 1,005 in 99 games played for Sonoma State.

Olsem, Scott and the rest of the Seawolf squad was unstoppable, connecting on 54.4 percent of their shots (31 for 57), including 58 percent from downtown (10 for 17).  The SSU defense also came up big, holding Cal State East Bay to 26 of 64 from the floor (40.6 percent) and just 7 of 24 from long range (29.2 percent).

It was a closely-contested battle between the two teams at the start of the night, but Sonoma State extended a four-point 33-29 lead to a 12-point 43-31 lead at the half.  It would then get worse for Cal State East Bay, as the Seawolves eventually got out to as much as 25 points at 63-38 with 14:17 to play in the game.  The Pioneers would battle back, though, coming to within 12 points at the 6:15 mark, but Sonoma State would prove to be too tough down the stretch, earning the 17-point win.

Justin Herold added 11 points on Friday and Steve Lackey contributed 10 as the top four SSU scorers (Olsem, Scott, Herold and Lackey) combined to outscore the entire CSUEB team (73-70).

Cal State East Bay was led by the 16 points of Nick Marshall and 15 points from Vincent Capellino off the bench.

Sonoma State will look to continue the momentum into Saturday night's game at Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in The Kelp Bed.
