Seawolves Gain Conference Win Over Cal State Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team was able to get their second win over the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay this season on Friday afternoon in an 8-5 victory on the road.  With the win the Seawolves improve to 3-1 in the Western Water Polo Association and 4-8 overall.

It was Julie Cooper who got the Otters on the board first in the opening quarter to give CSUMB a 1-0 lead early on. Less than a minute later Jessica Stansfield knotted things up for the Seawolves at 1-1, scoring the first of two goals in the game.  Cal State Monterey Bay closed out the quarter with a goal at the 3:45 mark to give them a 2-1 edge after the first eight minutes of play.  Sonoma State was able to score three times in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead, while holding CSU Monterey Bay scoreless going into the intermission.

Adrienne Bisharat recorded the second of her two goals at the start of the third quarter to give SSU a 5-2 advantage.  The Seawolves netted two more goals in the third period to give them a 7-3 lead.  Hayley Burke was able to fire one into the back of the cage with 1:48 remaining in the thrid quarter for CSUMB's only goal of the period.  Down by four, the Otters attempted to fight back by tallying two goals in the fourth, however, Stansfield recorded her second goal of the game to put the match out of reach, giving Sonoma State the 8-5 victory and season sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay.

In addition to Bisharat's and Stansfield's two scores, Laura Kunz, Natalie Del Carlo, Alexa May and Colette Reid each threw in one goal in the victory.  Goalkeeper Ariel Lockshaw recorded seven saves in addition to an assist and two steals.

For the Otters, Cooper and Burke each had two goals while Kylie Fields scored once.

Sonoma State will stay on the road for their next two games as they will take on Cal Lutheran and UC Davis on Sunday (Feb. 17) as part of the Davis Challenge, hosted by UC Davis.  First sprint against Cal Lutheran is set for 12:00 pm.
