FAIRFAX, Calif. -- Steven Warne overcame an hour and a half hail storm that delayed the shotgun start, followed by damp greens and sideways winds throughout the round, to fire a one-over-par 72 and claim the individual title in Tuesday's three-team golf match in Fairfax.
Warne's effort helped the Sonoma State men's golf team to a six-stroke victory over defending national champion Chico State and a 14-shot win over host Dominican in the 18-hole event.
Warne held off runner-up Alistair Docherty (73; +2) of Chico State by one shot while SSU teammate,
Blake Basham, placed third by shooting a three-over 74.
Kyle Listar carded a 78 (+7),
Matt Medeiros brought in a 79 (+8) and
Eric Ash finished with an 80 (+9).
Alex Ramsey participated as an individual, placing 15th with an 11-over 82 on the par-71, 6,718-yard course.
The Seawolves scored a 303, while Chico State (309) and Dominican (317) finished second and third, respectively.
Sonoma State heads down to San Bernardino next week to compete in the CSUSB Intercollegiate at Arrowhead Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
