ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State held Cal State Stanislaus to just one point over the final three minutes to earn a hard-fought 65-62 win over the Warriors on Friday evening in CCAA men's hoops action at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. The conference's leading scorer,
Patrick Scott, led all players with 16 points as the Seawolves won their third straight game, improving to 9-10, 7-8 CCAA on the year.
With their third consecutive win, the Seawolves are now just one game out of fourth place in the CCAA. UC San Diego and Cal State L.A. are both 8-7, one game ahead of Sonoma, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Chico State. The top four teams at the conclusion of the regular season will have the opportunity to host a first round game in the CCAA Tournament. The Seawolves hosted their first-ever CCAA Tournament game last season, defeating Cal State San Bernardino.
Friday's game between the Seawolves and Warriors was close at the beginning and at the end. The middle was another story. Following a nip and tuck first 18 minutes in which no team would lead by more than three, the Warriors began to build a lead, holding Sonoma scoreless over the final three minutes of the half to go up 34-27 at the break.
The Stanislaus lead grew to as many as 12 with just under 18 minutes left in the game before the Seawolves quickly narrowed the gap. An 8-0 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from
Will Olsem cut the lead to four at 41-37.
Sonoma State would make it all the way back a few minutes later, tying it up at 48 on a free throw by
Steve Lackey.
Their first lead since the first half came at the 7:30 mark when Scott nailed one of his three three-pointers on the night.
The teams would had the lead back and forth in a furious finish that saw the game knotted for the 11th and final time with 2:53 left on when Sonoma's
Emmanuel Bradford sank a layup.
Following a missed layup at the other end of the court,
Jabri Jenkins gave the Seawolves what would end up being the game-winning points on a runner with 2:08 to play. The Seawolves would force two missed shots and a turnover before icing it with a pair of
Jason Walter free throws.
The Warriors had one last chance to tie it up, down three with the clock running down, but
Will Olsem poked the ball away with two ticks remaining, securing victory for the home side.
Scott's 16 points came on 5-of-11 shooting. He also had seven rebounds in a game-high 37 minutes of action.
Justin Herold had a big first half on his way to his second double-double of the season. The Santa Rosa native ended up with 12 points and ten rebounds.
Sonoma shot 46.9% for the game - and a blistering 60.9% in the second half. They outrebounded the Warriors 31-30 and hit seven three-pointers on the night.
Nick Hodge and Taylor Bell each had 14 points for the Warriors, who had four in double digits on the night.
The Seawolves will face rival Chico State tomorrow night as part of Pack The Den Night at The Wolves' Den. Many exciting activities are planned, including a visit from recent Pro Hall of Fame selection Larry Allen. Tip off is schedule for 7:30.
