MISSION VIEJO, Calif. -- Steven Warne fired a 15-over-par 228 to tie for 13th place, leading the Sonoma State men's golf team to an eighth place finish out of 16 teams at this week's 63rd Annual SoCal Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by UC San Diego at Mission Viejo Country Club in Orange County. Warne jumped from 24th after the first 18 holes to finish 13th alongside five other golfers.
Abilene Christian's Alex Carpenter followed a pair of 72's to fire a tournament-record 63 in Tuesday's third and final round -- he earned medalist honors with a total score of six-under-par 207, nine shots better than runner-up Jered Stone from Cal State Monterey Bay (216; +3), who carded a 67 in his final 18 holes of the tournament. However, it was Cal State Stanislaus (891) to claim the team championship, just three swings ahead of second-place Cal State Monterey Bay (894).
Blake Basham tied for 24th with rounds of 76, 82 and 74 to total 232 (+19),
Eric Ash came in at 43rd with a 79-80-78--237 (+24),
Matt Medeiros finished a stroke back of Ash with scores of 79-77-82--238 (+25) and
Brandon Lee tied for 52nd after shooting an 81-82-78--241 (+28) in the field of 88 golfers.
Finishing behind Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State Monterey Bay on the team leaderboard was Grand Canyon (905), Abilene Christian (907), Central Oklahoma (918), Belmont Abbey (918), UC San Diego-A (927) and Sonoma State (931), which placed third through eighth, respectively. Dixie State (936), St. Edward's (939), Cal State San Bernardino (942), Washburn (942), UC San Diego-B (958), Wilmington-DE (969), Southwest Baptist (1020) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (1054) placed at the bottom of the leaderboard.
Sonoma State will return to action in two weeks at the CSUB Invitational at Bakersfield (Calif.) Country Club on Mar. 25-26.
