Eric Ash Wins Playoff, Snags Medalist Honors; SSU Takes First

Final Results

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --
After finishing the 54-hole event in a tie for first at even par, Sonoma State's Eric Ash and CSU Bakersfield's Chase Goodvin would settle the score in a sudden-victory playoff.  Both drained their birdie putt on the first playoff hole, but Ash would emerge as the champion on the second playoff hole, rolling in an eagle to win the individual title at this week's CSU Bakersfield Spring Invitational at Bakersfield Country Club in Bakersfield.

It is the first victory in nine collegiate tournaments for Ash, who recorded the second-best three-round score of his career, bringing in a 216.  The Seawolves also took home the team title, besting second-place CSU Bakersfield by 10 strokes.

Ash carded rounds of 71, 72 and 73 to shoot even this week on the par 72, 6,804-yard course, outlasting CSUB's Goodvin, who recorded three identical rounds of 72.  Steven Warne ended the event just three shots back of Ash and Goodvin, placing third with a 73-74-72--219 (+3), and Brandon Lee tied for fourth with scores of 74-74-73--221 (+5).  Grant Denbrock (70-79-79--228) finished in a tie for 10th place at +12, Matt Medeiros (77-75-77--229) tied for 12th at +13 and Blake Basham (76-79-75--236) tied for 14th at +14.

The Seawolves, who trailed the Roadrunners by eight strokes coming into Tuesday's third and final round, shot 18 swings better than the hosts to total 882 (+18) and claim victory.  CSUB brought in a score of 892 (+28), holding off third-place South Dakota State (895; +31) by three shots.  North Dakota (936: +72) finished fourth, followed by last-place Cal State Dominguez Hills (1,002; +138).

Sonoma State will take a week off before heading to the site of this year's NCAA Division II West/Central Regional Championship for the Saint Martin's Preview Invite (Apr. 8-9) at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash.  The NCAA regional tournament on May 6-8 will also be held at The Home Course.
