ROHNERT PARK – The Sonoma State baseball team outscored Cal State Stanislaus 15-3, behind strong pitching from
Taylor Herbert and
Ian Ocon who both earned wins in the doubleheader sweep on Sunday at Seawolf Diamond. The Seawolves put up the lucky number seven in the eighth inning to take a wide 10-1 victory in game one. The nightcap was a closer game in which SSU scored in the first three innings to stake a lead that would not be relinquished. Four relief pitchers, including
Jayson Richards' second save of the season, helped hold of the Warriors and give Sonoma State a 5-2 win. The Seawolves improve their record to 24-14, 16-12 CCAA, while Cal State Stanislaus falls to 8-31, 5-27 CCAA.
GAME ONE: SONOMA STATE 10, CAL STATE STANISLAUS 1 – BOX SCORE
The Sonoma offense didn't get on the board until the sixth inning, breaking the scoreless game with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, followed by a one run seventh inning that gave the hosts a 3-0 lead. Cal State Stanislaus was able to get one run back in the eighth inning when James Heller hit into an RBI fielder's choice that scored Ross Gonsalves.
However, leading 3-1, the Seawolves were able to bat around in the bottom of the eighth inning and put up seven runs, highlighted by a three-run homerun by
Devon Zenn, scoring
Garrett Schwartz and
Scott Templeton.
Scott Harkin,
Jackson Stogner, and Schwartz also tallied RBIs in the big offensive inning to take a 10-1 lead and victory.
In addition to Zenn's three RBIs, Schwartz recorded two, as well as three hits in the game. Herbert was credited with his third win of the season by throwing six and one-third shutout innings with three strikeouts.
Skippy Ferreria went 3-for-4 at the plate while Craig Beevers and Heller each had two hits. Warrior starting pitcher, Rafael Vasquez, pitched for six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts in his sixth loss of the season.
GAME TWO: SONOMA STATE 5, CAL STATE STANISLAUS 2 – BOX SCORE
The Seawolves put up runs in the first, second, and third innings, forcing CSUS starter Andrew Graham out of the game after just two and one-third innings. With Sonoma State leading 4-0 in the fifth inning, the Warriors put two runs on the board and threatened to tack on more with bases loaded, but Clint Brill flied out to end the inning and the Warrior threat. Sonoma State crossed the plate once more in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the game back to a three-run lead at 5-2. Richards recorded his second save of the season, shutting down the Stanislaus offense with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning.
Offensively for the Seawolves,
Steven Filippi and
Justin Serrao accounted for two hits, while Filippi, Schwartz, Zenn,
Sam Montgomery, and Serrao knocked in RBIs in the victory. Ocon threw four and two-third innings and earned his first win of the season for the Seawolves behind seven strikeouts.
Ferreria led the offense for the Warriors by going 3-for-4 at the dish, while Colt McLaughlin recorded the lone RBI for Cal State Stanislaus. Graham took his fourth loss of the season after allowing four runs on seven hits.
Sonoma State will take on Cal State L.A. next weekend at home in Rohnert Park in a four-game series. The Golden Eagles are currently second in the CCAA standings, while SSU holds the fourth spot; four teams qualify for the CCAA tournament. First game of the series will be on Friday with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
