#4 COLORADO STATE 9, #5 SONOMA STATE 8
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming into the annual WWPA Championship Tournament as the number five seed, the Sonoma State women's water polo team faced off against the number four seed, Colorado State, for the second time this season. The Seawolves were able to keep the game within two goals throughout, but eventually lost by one, 9-8, in the opening round of the tournament. Sonoma State falls to 12-19, 6-7 WWPA, while Colorado State improves to 9-19, 4-4 WWPA and will play number one seed UC San Diego in the semifinals tomorrow.
After losing to Colorado State in early March 11-8, Sonoma State looked to get revenge on the Rams. Both teams tallied two goals in the first quarter, leading to a 2-2 tie at the end of the first period. The Seawolves were able to tack on two more goals in the second quarter, both from the hand of
Adrienne Bisharat, but were doubled up by CSU behind two goals from Kelcy Barott, as the Rams netted four goals in the period to take a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Scoring was even in the third quarter at one goal apiece, as Colorado State held on to their two-goal lead with a score of 7-5. The Seawolves attempted to make a move at a comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Rams 3-2, but the Seawolves came up short, falling to CSU 9-8.
Jessica Stansfield led the Seawolves' offense, recording a hat trick in Friday morning's game. Chipping in with two goals was Bisharat, while
Natalie Del Carlo,
Lindsay Rangel, and
Noelle Herrera at contributed one goal in the loss.
Ariel Lockshaw got the start in the cage and made eight saves.
For the Rams, Barott led the way, netting four goals in the win. Shelby Schaefer tallied two goals and Megan Richardson, Kelsey Carrigan, and Stephanie Weed all scored one goal for the Rams. Goalkeeper Michelle Slagle got the start and made five saves in the cage for CSU.
Sonoma State will play in the Consolation Semifinals tomorrow (Apr. 27), against eight-seeded Cal State San Bernardino. The Seawolves beat the Coyotes, 13-7, at the Loyola Marymount Invitational back on March 23. First sprint is set for 9:30 am at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
