SEASIDE, Calif. – After winning six of its eight series this season, the Sonoma State baseball team finds themselves in rare territory, faced with a must win situation on Sunday to salvage a win from the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay. The Otters accomplished a doubleheader sweep of Seawolves on Saturday in Seaside, spurred by a ninth-inning comeback in which they scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to take an 8-7 win. The nightcap featured a pitchers-duel where CSUMB starter Jeff Owen gave up five hits and no runs in the narrow 1-0 victory. With the win, CSUMB locks up a series win and improves their record to 23-10, 15-8 CCAA, while the Seawolves drop to 21-12, 13-10 CCAA.
GAME ONE: CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 8, #23 SONOMA STATE 7 – BOX SCORE
Sonoma State got on the board in the first inning with two runs and extended their lead to 3-0 in the third inning when
Steven Moen reached on a fielder's choice, scoring
Steven Filippi on the play. In the fourth inning, the Seawolves tacked on two more runs to bring the score to 5-0.
Cal State Monterey Bay got three runs across in the bottom of the fourth inning, featured by a two-RBI single by David Garcia to bring the score to 5-2. Ronnie Fhurong knocked in one more run for the hosts to narrow the deficit to two runs at 5-3. Sonoma State tacked on one run in the fifth and one in the seventh, while CSUMB put one up in the bottom of the eighth to bring the total score to 7-4 going into the final inning.
Sonoma State was held quiet in the final frame, only getting one runner on via walk. Unfortunately, it was Cal State Monterey Bay's inning as they led off with two hit batters and single up the middle to load the bases with no outs. Brian Hagget drew an RBI walk, and Mark Hurley hit an RBI sacrifice fly, to bring the Otters to within a run at 7-6. With runners on second and third, Tommy George drove in the tying and winning run with a two-RBI double in walk off fashion.
Sonoma State starter
Harmen Sidhu was faced with a no-decision after pitching for seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out nine Otters. Reliever Steven Zaharias (1-3) was tagged with the loss after exiting the game leaving runners on base, which would eventually be the game tying and winning base runners. Jonas Noack came on in the eighth inning as the third reliever for the Otters and was credited with his first win of the season. Starter Will Anderson tossed five and one-third innings while allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits for Cal State Monterey Bay.
Offensively for Sonoma State, Filippi smacked three hits in five at bats, while
Tyler Glenn recorded two RBIs in the heartbreaking loss. For CSUMB, Hurley and George each had two hits while George and Garcia contributed two RBIs each.
GAME TWO: CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 1, #23 SONOMA STATE 0 – BOX SCORE
Both teams combined for eight hits and one run as pitching performances by SSU's
Glenn Wallace (4-1) and CSUMB's Jeff Owen (7-1) kept the offenses silent as each pitched complete games, combining for 13 strikeouts in the Otter's 1-0 victory over the Seawolves in the nightcap.
The Otters got their run across in the bottom of the second inning when Jason Merjano reached on an error to the shortstop, bringing in Tommy George from third base. In the Seawolves five hits, only two runners would advance past first base in a game where SSU out hit CSUMB five to three.
Steven Filippi contributed two hits while
Devon Zenn,
Jackson Stogner, and
Shawn Walters cracked one hit each in the loss. For the Otters, George pounded out two hits while Victor Rasor-Thompson slapped one hit in the small victory.
Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay will conclude its four-game series tomorrow in Seaside with first pitch set for 11:00 am.
