BOX SCORE Cal State Monterey Bay 11, #23 Sonoma State 4 -- Box Score
SEASIDE, Calif. -- Shawn Walters went 3 for 4 with a run scored and
Scott Harkin added a pair of hits, but the Sonoma State baseball team couldn't overcome a six-run inning by host Cal State Monterey Bay, losing 11-4 in Sunday's series finale at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside. The 23rd-ranked Seawolves lost all four games of the series, dropping into fifth place in the CCAA standings at 13-11 (21-13 overall). The Otters (24-10, 16-8 CCAA) now hold a two-game lead over Cal State East Bay for third place with 11 wins in their last 14 games.
Cal State Monterey Bay jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but without the virtue of a base hit or a defensive error. SSU starter
Matt Manfre hit the leadoff batter, who then stole second, walked the next batter, surrendered a sacrifice bunt, threw a wild pitch, then induced a sacrifice fly, resulting in two runs for the hosts in the bottom of the first inning.
The Seawolves got a run back in the second on an RBI single by
Jackson Stogner, but the Otters took the run right back in their next at bat on an RBI single by Ronnie Fhurong.
Up 3-1 in the fourth, CSUMB broke out for six runs on seven hits to essentially put the game out of SSU's reach, taking a 9-1 lead. Sonoma wouldn't go away quietly, however, as
Scott Templeton batted home two runs and a passed ball allowed another run to score, but despite having the bases loaded with one out, the Seawolves couldn't score any more as A.J. Quintero worked the final four innings and allowed just three SSU hits the rest of the way.
Another two runs came across the plate for CSU Monterey Bay in the sixth and that would eventually be the final score.
Walters and Harkin combined for five of the nine Sonoma State hits in the ballgame and Templeton recorded two RBI. Manfre (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on three hits in the first three and a thirds innings.
Sonoma State will look to rebound next weekend when it plays in a home-and-home series with Cal State Stanislaus. The first two games of the series will take place in a doubleheader in Turlock on Saturday before the series shifts to Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park for games three and four on Sunday. The doubleheaders on both days will begin at 11:00 a.m.
