HERSHEY, Pa. -- Eric Ash fired an even-par 71 and was one of four players in the field of 108 participants to birdie all three par-5 holes to open the 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa. in a tie for ninth place on Monday. The sophomore from Loomis, Calif., is representing Sonoma State University as an individual in the three-round national tournament that lasts through Wednesday.
Ash, who tied for third in the West/South Central tournament in Dupont, Wash. on May 6-8 to qualify for the NCAA Championship tournament, dropped in a total of four birdies, but a couple of bogeys and a double bogey put him at even-par on the par-71, 6,984-yard course. Despite being In a tie for ninth place, Ash is just three strokes out of the lead, which is held by Barry's Adam Svensson at -3 (68). Three players are tied for second at -2 (69) and four players are tied fifth at -1 (70).
The individual champion will be crowned on Wednesday after 54 total holes are played.
In the team competition, Barry (E) holds a six-stroke lead over second-place Lynn (+6) and a seven-stroke lead over third-place and fellow CCAA-member Cal State Monterey Bay (+7). Western Washington and defending national champion Nova Southeastern are tied for fourth at +8.
Ash begins the second of three rounds on Tuesday when he tees off at 5:20 am Pacific Time.
