HERSHEY, Pa. -- After shooting an even-par 71 and tying for ninth place in the opening round on Monday, Sonoma State University sophomore
Eric Ash slipped two spots to 11th place, carding a three-over 74 in Tuesday's second round, but remains just seven strokes out of the lead with 18 holes to play at the 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa.
Ash, a sophomore from Loomis, Calif., rolled in four more birdies on Tuesday, but that effort would be erased by four bogeys and a double dogey to place him at +3 overall with a 36-hole score of 145. He has carded eight birdies in the tournament, which is tied for the second most among all 108 participants in this year's event. Ash trails the individual leader, Rob Damschen (-4; 138) of Cal State Stanislaus, by seven shots after Damschen was just one of four golfers to bring in a score under par on Tuesday -- his round of 68 (-3) was the best of the day. South Carolina-Aiken's Matt Atkins (-3; 139) is in second place ahead of three players tied for third place at -1 (141).
Should Ash finish in the Top 12 after Wednesday's third and final round, he would post the best individual finish by a Sonoma State men's golfer at the NCAA tournament since Jarin Todd and Patrick Bauer placed in a tie for third in back-to-back years in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
In the team competition, Barry University, which is four-over-par for the tournament, posted the lowest team score for the second day in a row (+4) and extended its lead over rival Nova Southeastern (+14) to 10 shots after NSU recorded a six-over-par score for the day. Florida Southern (+19), South Carolina Aiken (+22), Lynn (+23), Cal State Monterey Bay (+26), Cal State Stanislaus (+28) and Central Oklahoma (+29) are in third through eighth places, respectively after the first two rounds.
While the top eight teams at the conclusion of Wednesday's play moves on to the match/medal format of the team championship, the NCAA Division II individual champion will be crowned at the conclusion of the third round, scheduled for Wednesday.
Ash is scheduled to tee off at 8:50 am Pacific Time on Wednesday.
