FINAL INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
HERSHEY, Pa. -- Sonoma State University sophomore
Eric Ash cruised into the final eight holes of Wednesday's round at one-under-par on the day and two-over-par for the tournament, but four bogeys and two double bogeys catapulted him from the Top 10 and into a tie for 27th to wrap up individual competition at the 2013 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships at Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa. Ash ended the 54-hole event at 10-over-par, totaling a 223 for the week.
Ash, a sophomore from Loomis, Calif., came into the third and final round in a tie for 11th at +3 after scoring a 71 on day one and a 74 on day two at the par-71, 6,984-yard course, but scored a 78 on day three to fall back 16 spots. In total, he carded 11 birdies and 26 pars in the 54 holes he played this week.
Three players ended the three-round tournament in a tie atop the leaderboard at two-under-par 211, but Florida Southern's Tim Crouch, who entered the final day in a tie for sixth place, emerged as the national champion after a one-hole playoff with South Carolina-Aiken's Matt Atkins and Western Washington's Jake Webb. WWU's Webb made the biggest jump on the final day, leaping from 15th to first after firing a tournament-best 65 on Wednesday. Cal State Stanislaus' Rob Damschen placed fourth with an even-par 213 and Grand Canyon's Jimmy Kozikowski finished fifth at one-over 214.
While the individual champion was crowned on Wednesday after 55 holes, it will take 54 more holes over the next two days to determine the team champion. The Top 8 teams after Wednesday's round advances to match play that takes place on Thursday and Friday. Florida Southern (+15), Barry (+24), Nova Southeastern (+25), Lynn (+36), South Carolina-Aiken (+36), Cal State Monterey Bay (+41), Missouri-St. Louis (+46) and Western Washington (+46) move on to compete for the Division II title. Cal State Stanislaus, the only other CCAA team in the competition, missed the cut by four strokes, finishing in ninth place (+50).
Ash ended his sophomore campaign in 2012-13 with a 74.3 stroke average and six Top-10 finishes, including one medalist honor in which he earned at the CSUB Spring Invitational in Bakersfield, Calif. on Mar. 25-26; it was his first-career individual title.
