UC Davis 16, Sonoma State 7
ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team opened play this season at home against the Aggies of UC Davis. Although the offense came alive in the second half, the hole dug in the first half was too much to overcome as the Seawolves eventually fell to the Aggies, 16-7.
UC Davis started early with a well-balanced attack of five girls each scoring a goal while shutting the Seawolves out in the first quarter. The second quarter saw a Seawolf goal by
Caitlin Risden with 1:08 left in the half, but the Aggies led 8-1 at the halftime break with seven UCD players having a goal -- two by Carla Tocchini.
The urgency and effort of Sonoma State seemed to kick in during the second half, but the seven-goal halftime deficit proved too costly by games end. Two goals were scored by the Seawolves in the third quarter, one by
Nicole Browning (3:12), and the next by
Brittny Hummel (0:30). The Aggies, though, scored three in the third to balance out the Seawolves' strikes. The fourth quarter was more of the same with Sonoma State netting four goals while UC Davis put in five.
Alexa May scored twice in the fourth while Hummel added two more to finish with a team-high three goals on the day.
Sonoma State next plays in La Jolla at the Triton Invitational on Feb. 8-9. The Seawolves will then play two more road games before returning home on Feb. 16 to play Long Beach State at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool; first sprint is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
