WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- Haley Whitbeck carded rounds of 72, 76 and 75 for a 54-hole score of 223 to earn individual medalist honors -- the first of her career -- and lead the Sonoma State women's golf team to victory at the Dennis Rose Invitational, hosted by Hawaii-Hilo; it is the second team title for the Seawolves this fall. In fact, four of the five Sonoma State golfers finished in the Top 5 to earn the championship by a margin of 46 strokes over runner-up Saint Martin's.
Right behind Whitbeck on the individual leaderboard was
Alexis Hayes with scores of 83, 71 and 70 for a total of 224 to place second. Jennifer Liedes of Saint Martin's placed third with a 231, followed by
Hannah Gregg (76-79-80--235) in fourth place and
Sarah Rotter (79-81-76--236) in fifth place to account for the Seawolves' total score of 918.
Erin Martens placed 14th with scores of 85, 87 and 80 for a score of 252 for the week.
Following Sonoma State (918) and Saint Martin's (964) on the team leaderboard was Hawaii Pacific (999), Hawaii-Hilo (1000) and Holy Names (1143) to round out the five-team event.
Sonoma State will now take a three-month break from competition before opening the spring season at the Super San Diego Championship on Feb. 9-10, 2015.
