GAME 2: Sonoma State 3, Cal State East Bay 2 -- Box Score
HAYWARD, Calif. -- After surrendering five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lose the opener 6-5, the Sonoma State baseball team bounced back with a 3-2 win in the nightcap to salvage a split with host Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon in Hayward. The Seawolves (4-4) and Pioneers (6-4) each go to 3-3 in CCAA play. The series will now shift to Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
Four players --
Jourdan Weiks,
Alex Crosby,
Justin Serrao and
Eric Ehlow -- each had three hits on the day, accounting for 12 of the combined 17 hits by Sonoma State in Friday's twinbill. Ehlow continued to show his power, blasting a two-run home run in the first inning of game one that helped give SSU a 3-0 lead after one frame. The Seawolves tacked on two more runs in the third to build a 5-0 cushion for starter
George Asmus, who went six innings and gave up seven hits, one run and one walk, striking out five.
The one run Asmus gave up came in the bottom of the fifth inning after back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning.
Stevan Zaharias came on in relief in the seventh and stayed out of trouble for the most part until the ninth. That's when Cal State East Bay singled, walked, singled, singled, struckout, walked, singled, and singled again to pull off the improbable come-from-behind victory over Sonoma State with five runs in the bottom of the ninth off of Zaharias and
Ricky Clark (0-1).
In the nightcap, the Seawolves pounded out nine hits off of Pioneer starter Nick Hudson (2-1) while
Haydon Turpin (1-0) and
Cody Lane (S, 1) combined to allow just four hits.
Sonoma took the early lead with a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by
Shawn Walters.
Two innings later, East Bay loaded the bases with one out with a pair of singles and a walk before a run came home on a sacrifice fly into center field. Another run came home on the play, but only after
Daniel Caresio's throw from center to attempt to nail the tagging runner at third base sailed into the CSUEB dugout.
East Bay's 2-1 lead was a brief one as the Seawolves answered back with the deciding runs in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and second, Sonoma got an RBI double from Walters, followed by a sacrifice fly by Weiks to regain the lead.
Turpin made the lead hold up through the fifth inning to earn the victory and Lane pitched the sixth and seventh to earn the save.
Dallas Seidel went 2 for 3 in the contest with a pair of runs scored while Crosby also added two hits in the winning effort.
