ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team won its second game in a row, defeating fellow WWPA-member Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at the Dr. G Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves improve to 4-12 this season and 2-2 against WWPA opponents.
Not even 30 seconds into the game, the Seawolves fell behind 1-0, but by the end of the first quarter, they found themselves ahead 2-1 on goals by
Jessica Becker and
Brittny Hummel. Sonoma State's offense then came alive tremendously in the second quarter. Six different players netted the six goals scored in the quarter to help the Seawolves take an 8-3 lead into the half.
Noelle Herrera opened up the third quarter with her second goal of the game at the 7:06 mark.
Carleigh Robinson and
Caitlin Risden would follow with each of their second goals of the game in the period as the Seawolves took an 11-5 lead into the final eight minutes of play.
Herrera would then add another goal in the fourth quarter to finish with a team-high three for the day.
Megan McGrath also scored her first goal of the season, capping off 13-6 victory for the Seawolves.
Cal State San Bernardino was led by Katie Braun, who caged three goals for the Coyotes.
Sonoma State will now play its final six road games of the 2014 season, beginning next Thursday in Irvine against Concordia; first sprint is scheduled for 3:30 pm. Then, following four matches at the Loyola Marymount Invitational next weekend and a conference game at Cal State Monterey Bay on Mar. 28, the Seawolves will return home for the final five games of the regular season before the WWPA Championships commence on Apr. 25-27 in La Jolla.
