GAME 2: Sonoma State 2, Hawaii-Hilo 1 (9 innings) -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- After a
Wesley Wallace triple with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of game two,
Tyler Glenn delivered a pinch-hit RBI single down the first base line to help the Sonoma State baseball team to its second walkoff victory in three days, a 2-1 win over Hawaii-Hilo in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond. The Seawolves lost the opener, 8-3, moving their overall record to 10-9 this season. The Vulcans moved to 8-10 on the year.
In the opener, Sonoma State drew first blood, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a bases-loaded two-run single by Glenn, scoring
Jackson Stogner and
Alex Crosby. However, Hawaii-Hilo rallied for seven unanswered runs to take a 7-2 lead through five innings of play.
Stogner helped the Seawolves get a run back in the seventh with an RBI single up the middle scoring
Kyle Kearney, but the Vulcans responded with another run in the eighth, which held up to be the final score of 8-3 in favor of the visitors from Hilo, Hawaii.
The Vulcans pounded out 13 hits in game one, including five in a four-run fourth inning off of
Stevan Zaharias (0-1), who was tagged with the loss in his first career start for Sonoma. He lasted four innings and gave up seven hits, five runs (four earned), walked one and struckout one.
In the nightcap scheduled for seven innings, it would take a full nine to decide a winner. Hawaii-Hilo struck first in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Samuel Kim. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when
Justin Serrao lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring
Cameron Merriwether. Sonoma State threatened to bring home the go-ahead run in the same inning with
Garrett Schwartz getting to third base on a passed ball, but the Vulcans got out of the jam, inducing an inning-ending flyout.
From that point on until the ninth, neither pitcher -- Hilo's Michael Slifer and Sonoma's
Jayson Richards, both on in relief in the sixth inning -- allowed a base runner. The Vulcans put a runner on via a walk with one out, but he was later thrown out attempting to steal second base by
Shawn Walters. In the bottom half of the inning, Wallace smashed a triple to right center field with two outs before Glenn, who pinch hit for
Cory Hearne, laced a rocket down the first base line that took a favorable hop allowing Glenn to reach first and Wallace to score the game-winning run.
Richards got the victory in relief, going to 1-0 on the year in just his second appearance. He worked the final four innings and allowed just one hit, walking two and striking out three. His effort came after starter
Taylor Toccalino and
Aaron Gillis went three and two innings, respectively. Toccalino, Gillis and Richards combined to allow just six hits and the one run, which was unearned.
Wallace went 2 for 4 in game two and four others had a base hit to total six for Sonoma State. Glenn went 3 for 5 with three RBI in the two games combined.
Sonoma State steps back into CCAA play this weekend when it takes on San Francisco State in a home-and-home series. The Seawolves and Gators will play a single game at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park on Friday at 2:00 pm, followed by a doubleheader at Maloney Field in San Francisco on Saturday at 11:00 am before coming back to Rohnert Park on Sunday at 11:00 am to wrap up the four-game series with a single game.
