#13 UC San Diego 15, Sonoma State 6
Sonoma State 11, Cal State Monterey Bay 7(Written by Gian D'Ambra, SSU Sports Information Student Assistant)ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's water polo team played two games on Saturday at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool, and after a 15-6 loss to 13th-ranked UC San Diego, the Seawolves bounced back to earn an 11-7 victory to earn a split against fellow WWPA opponents. Sonoma rises to 7-17 this season and 4-3 in conference play.
Game one against the Tritons saw very little offense from both teams early on. A single Triton goal was balanced out by
Nicole Browning to end the first quarter with a 1-1 tie. After a Carliegh Robinson goal gave the Seawolves the 3-2 lead in the second quarter, UCSD went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-3 lead late in the third quarter.
Jessica Becker stopped the run to cut the lead to 9-4 at the end of the third, but it was too little too late at that point. The Tritons netted six goals to put the Seawolves away in the fourth and halt all hopes of an upset-comeback win. Browning put in her second goal of the game and
Caitlin Risden added another as the Seawolves lost 15-6.
The Seawolves' second game of the day started very similar to the first one. The first quarter ended at a 1-1 tie again, this time the Seawolf goal came off the hands of
Brittny Hummel. The second quarter ended with the same score as the first game too, only with the Seawolves on top 5-3 in this one.
The four Seawolves with a goal in the second quarter were Robinson,
Lexii Morabito,
Noelle Herrera, and
Shannon Baer.
Sonoma State's offense came alive to extend their lead over the Otters in the third quarter. Five goals were scored by three different girls to end the quarter with a 10-5 Seawolf advantage. Herrera and Hummel both netted their second and third goals of the game, and Risden scored her first.
Risden would add another in the fourth quarter to see the Seawolves take the 11-7 win.
Sonoma State next plays at home Sunday against the Wolverines of the University of Michigan. First sprint is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
