Sonoma's Season Ends With Loss To Dixie State At Regionals

Eric Ehlow drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field in the third.
BOX SCORE #27 Dixie State 6, Sonoma State 5  --  Box Score

LA JOLLA, Calif.  -
-  Missed opportunities at the plate resulted in the end of the 2014 season for the Sonoma State baseball team as they dropped a tough 6-5 decision to 27th-ranked Dixie State on Friday at the NCAA West Regional in La Jolla.  The Seawolves hit the ball much better than in their opening game of the regional, but 11 runners stranded on base, including the tying and go-ahead run in the 9th, were just too much to overcome.

The Seawolves see their season end at 27-18.  They finish with a winning record for the 17th time in their last 19 years and for the 24th time in John Goelz's 29 seasons as head coach.  While Friday's defeat is a bitter pill to swallow, the Seawolves accomplish much as a team in 2014, including the ninth conference championship in school history.

After missing his start in the conference tournament, the Seawolves turned to staff ace George Asmus to stop their three-game losing streak and prolong the season.  While he might not have had his A-stuff, Asmus was still largely effective, keeping the Seawolves in the game by allowing just two runs over four innings.

After a frustrating night at the plate on Thursday and coming up empty after loading the bases in the second inning, the Seawolves finally broke through in the third.  Following a walk to Jourdan Weiks and a Daniel Caresio single, Eric Ehlow poked a ball through the left side to score both.  Justin Serrao would then drive in Ehlow on a grounder to left, making it 3-1.

Dixie would get one run back in the fourth, on a home run by Ty Johnson, before exploding for four in the fifth.  During the inning, the Seawolves would allow just two hits, but they'd be done in by three walks and three wild pitches.

Down 6-3, Sonoma State would show resilience at the end of the game, scoring a run in the eighth on a Wesley Wallace RBI single and then mounting a promising attack in the 9th

After Caresio and Stogner reached to begin the inning, Alex Crosby delivered a one-out RBI single through the right side.  With two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd as a result of a double steal, Serrao was frozen by a curve ball to end the game.

Caresio and Dallas Seidel each had two hits to lead Sonoma State.  Cody Lane did a nice job in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings.  Devin Alexander was tagged in the loss after yielding four runs in two-thirds of an inning.

The Red Storm pounded out 12 hits.  Kris Kaplan led the way with two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth.
