Robinson Scores Three, But Sonoma Drops Two At Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Carleigh Robinson scored three goals in two games on Saturday, but the Sonoma State women's water polo team lost a pair of matches against two Top 20 opponents -- 16-2 to No. 5 Arizona State and 12-2 to No. 18 UC Santa Barbara -- to open play at the annual Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego in La Jolla.  The Seawolves fall to 1-7 this season with five of their losses against NCAA Division I programs ranked in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 20 Coaches' Poll.

Sonoma will play two more matches on Sunday at the Triton Invitational, beginning with a 9:20 am matchup against the loser of the Santa Clara-Marist contest being played at 4:00 pm today.

Alexa May gave the Seawolves an early 1-0 lead, scoring the first goal of the match at the 4:44 mark of the first quarter, but Arizona State evened the score just 13 seconds later, the first of 13 unanswered goals recorded by the fifth-ranked Sun Devils to put the match out of reach.  Robinson ended the 13-0 run by ASU with a score at the 3:31 mark of the fourth quarter, but the SSU offense would be held scoreless the rest of the way.

Andrea Mallul made eight stops in the cage for Sonoma State, making one steal.

Arizona State, which improved to 7-0 this season, had two players with hat tricks -- Izabella Chiappini and Claudia Abad.  Three others scored at least two goals.

Two of Robinson's three goals on the day were scored in the third quarter against 18th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, but the Gauchos jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Robinson cut the deficit to seven goals at 9-2 heading into the fourth quarter.  However, UCSB outscored SSU 3-0 in the final eight minutes to improve to 5-5 on the season with the 12-2 win.
