SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Kaysie Lewis and
Noelle Herrera scored three times on Sunday, but the Sonoma State women's water polo team suffered 12-4 and 14-6 losses to No. 4 California and No. 10 Pacific, respectively, to wrap up the LouStrong Memorial hosted by San Jose State in San Jose.
The Seawolves will head into next Saturday's matchup with conference-foe Cal State Monterey Bay with an 0-4 record. The Otters also went 0-4 this weekend in San Jose. The SSU-CSUMB match in Seaside is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
#4 California 12, Sonoma State 4 -- Box ScoreAfter trailing 4-0, Lewis put one into the cage just before the end of the first quarter, but the nationally-ranked Bears scored three more unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead with 2:25 to go in the first half.
Carleigh Robinson made it 7-2 with a goal at the 2:11 mark of the second quarter, but California caged two more before the halftime break to enjoy a 9-2 advantage after the first 16 minutes.
Lewis and
Amanda Weddle pushed goals into the cage late in the second half, but it was too little, too late as Cal swam away with the 12-4 win.
Taylor Plorin made 10 saves in the loss.
#10 Pacific 14, Sonoma State 6 -- Box ScoreHerrera scored an equalizer just 76 seconds into the contest after SSU gave up a Pacific goal in the opening minute, but the Tigers scored seven unanswered goals to pull away for an 8-1 lead at half.
Lewis, Herrera and
Lily Carlon scored goals in the third quarter to put the Seawolves within six at 10-4, but UOP outscored SSU 4-2 in the final eight minutes to earn the 14-6 win. Herrera and
Nicole Cunningham each scored for Sonoma in the fourth quarter. Plorin made a weekend-high 13 saves.
