Men's Hoops Battles Tough With Division I Anteaters

Ronnie Harris scored 11 points in 22 minutes off the bench Saturday in Irvine.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Three Sonoma State men's basketball players scored in double figures and the Seawolves got to within 10 points with just under four minutes left in the contest, but NCAA Divison I UC Irvine pull away late for the 81-63 win in an exhibition game at the Bren Events Center Saturday afternoon.

Luke Cochran led Sonoma State with 15 points, Jimmy Golden added 12 and Naaman Hightower snared a game-high nine boards.  Ronnie Harris came off the bench to add 11 points, three assists and one steal, connecting on all eight of his free throws.

UCI shot 64 percent from the field in the first half to build a 43-25 halftime lead as Ioannis Dimakopoulos scored 11 of his points in the opening 20 minutes.

The Anteaters shot 51 percent from the floor in the game and hit 22 of 26 free throws.  UCI scored 14 fast-break points to none for the Seawolves and the 'Eaters had a 28-7 margin in points off turnovers.

The Seawolves shot 30 percent from the field for the contest and committed 18 turnovers to the Anteaters' 12.

Sonoma State will open the 2016-17 regular season on Friday at the Cal State East Bay Pioneer Challenge in Hayward against West Region power Western Washington.  Tip off from Pioneer Gymnasium is set for 5:30 pm.
