Seawolves Take DH Opener, Game Two To Resume Saturday

Jena Kaser was all smiles on Friday, hitting her 3rd homer of 2016 in SSU's 3-1 win.
BOX SCORE SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - For the second time this season, the Sonoma State Seawolves found themselves in a very interesting situation as the second game of a doubleheader was suspended due to darkness. The Seawolves prevailed in their opener with Cal State San Bernardino on Friday before darkness suspended a second game that had gone to extra innings.

Game 1 - Sonoma State 3, CSU San Bernardino 1

In the first of four games in San Bernardino over the weekend, the Seawolves got big games from Jena Kaser and Leanna Georges to propel them to a victory in the opener.

Kaser opened the scoring in the game with a leadoff homer in the second, her third homer of the year opening up a two-run inning for Sonoma State. Singles by Alison Strycula and Sarah Langley led to an Emma Ryan RBI double to plate Strycula and give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead.

After the Coyotes scored in the third to make it 2-1, Sonoma State got the run back in the fifth. After infield singles by Georges and Carlie Daniel, Kaser singled to left to load the bases. Jordann White then reached on Sonoma State's third infield hit of the inning, scoring Georges for the game's final run.

Amanda Llerena was terrific for the Seawolves, throwing her 12th complete game of the season and allowing only three hits and the lone unearned run while striking out a season-best 11. She faced only five over the minimum in picking up her team-best 10th win of the season. Georges and Kaser both had two hits for Sonoma State to lead the offense.

Game 2 - Sonoma State 3, CSU San Bernardino (SUSP - Top 10th)

After tying the game in the top of the seventh inning, the Seawolves and Coyotes were locked in an extra-inning battle before darkness put a halt to gameplay on Friday evening, pushing the game to Saturday morning.

Harkening back to Sonoma State's wild 14-inning affair with Cal State Monterey Bay on March 16, the Seawolves will play their second double-digit inning game of 2016 when play resumes at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

The Coyotes struck first in the second, scoring twice against starter Brielle Vidmar to give the home team an early cushion, but Sonoma State came back with single runs in consecutive innings.

In the third, Emma Ryan was hit by a pitch with one out but was forced out at second on a Malory Masajlo fielder's choice. The freshman moved to second on a balk by San Bernardino starter Amanda Ramirez and came home on a timely hit by fellow freshman Alee Balanon, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The Seawolves came through again in the fourth, and the tying run came a bit easier thanks to a Carlie Daniel solo homer. Her first home run of the season tied the game at 2-2.

San Bernardino got back in front thanks to a run in the fifth inning, but the Seawolves came through with only three outs remaining. Sarah Langley and Emma Ryan each hit one-out singles, which brought pinch-hitter Mayleen Mazon up against new pitcher Cassandra Wiliams.

The senior drew a key walk to load the bases, which allowed a fly ball to center by Balanon to become a sacrifice fly and tie the game. Amanda Llerena entered the game for Vidmar in the seventh and kept the game tied before the game was suspended.

Up Next: The two teams will finish up the suspended game before beginning the originally scheduled Saturday doubleheader. Both of those games will be scheduled for seven innings and will begin at the conclusion of the suspended game.
