Former Seawolf Scott Alexander Headed Back To Big Leagues

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Former Sonoma State pitcher Scott Alexander has been recalled by the Kansas City Royals and will join the big league club tonight when they face the New York Yankees.  Alexander, who pitched for the World Champion Royals in 2015 has been dominant in nine relief appearances for the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Royals' AAA affiliate in '16.

In nine games, all out of the bullpen, Alexander has gone 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA for the Storm Chasers.  He has finished three games for Omaha and has recorded one save.  In 61 career AAA games over the past three seasons, Alexander has a 3.27 ERA and 15 saves.

Last season, Alexander got into four games for the Royals, finishing three of them.  He walked three and struck out three in six innings of work.

Alexander played one season at Sonoma (2010) before being drafted by Kansas City with the 179th overall pick in the sixth round of the '10 MLB Draft.  A junior at Sonoma State in 2010, he elected to forego his senior season and sign a professional contract with the Royals organization.  He was an All-CCAA Honorable Mention pick in his only season at SSU, sporting a record of 3-6 with a 4.50 ERA.  His 70 strikeouts were a team-high and his opponent batting average of .209 was, at the time, the fourth-best in school history.

A native of Windsor, Alexander is one of four former SSU student-athletes to play in the Major Leagues.  He is accompanied on that exclusive list by Marshall Brant (1972-74), who played for New York Yankees in 1980-81 and for the Oakland Athletics in 1983.  Most recently, pitcher Daniel Barone (2004) broke into the big leagues with the Florida Marlins in 2007 and Tommy Everidge (2002-04) spent time with the Oakland Athletics in 2009.

With Alexander's promotion, two former Seawolves remain in AAA.  Thomas Lee is pitching with the St. Louis Cardinals' affiliate in Memphis while O'Koyea Dickson is in his second year with the Dodgers' affiliate in Oklahoma City.  For a list of former SSU baseball student-athletes who have played in the pros, click here.
