SAN FRANCISCO -- Haley Whitbeck fired a seven-over-par 153, including a second-round 75 on Tuesday to finish second and lead the Sonoma State women's golf team to second place at the inaugural Art of Golf Classic at Presidio Golf Course in San Francisco this week.
Whitbeck, who carded a 78 in Monday's opening round, ended the 36-hole event just three shots back of individual medalist Crystal Wang of host Academy of Art after Wang brought in scores of 73 and 77 on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
As a team, the Seawolves scored a 641 (+57), 20 strokes behind team champion and host Academy of Art (621; +37). Chico State (643; +59) came in third, followed by Holy Names (678; +94), Dominican (682; +98), Biola (685; +101), Point Loma (686; +102) and Hope International (741; +157).
Whitbeck, who tied ARTU's Roxanne Matta for the tournament lead with six birdies, was the only Seawolf to shoot under 80 in either round.
Samantha Oliva turned in a pair of 80's to total a 160 (+14) and place eighth,
Erin Martens and
Sabrina Virtusio recorded identical scores both Monday (83) and Tuesday (81) to score a 164 (+18) and finish tied for 16th, and
Cristina Picariello fired a pair of 87's for a 174 (+28) and a 27th place finish. Virtusio, who transferred from Academy of Art over the summer, led the tournament field with 25 pars, three more than three of her former teammates in Wang, Sterling Hawkins and Vicky Kuo.
Morgan Allen also competed for Sonoma State, but as an individual, finishing 32nd with a score of 94-82--176 (+30) in the opening tournament of 2016-17.
Sonoma State will return to action on Oct. 3-4 at the Dixie State Invitational at Sand Hollow Resort in St. George, Utah.
