Virtusio Ties For First At CSUSM To Wrap Up Fall Season

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- Sabrina Virtusio tied atop the individual leaderboard with a three-over-par 147 in the 36-hole CSUSM Fall Classic this week at Twin Oaks Golf Club in San Marcos, but the Cougars' Sarah Garcia captured medalist honors by way of the scorecard tiebreaker. Virtusio's effort, however, propelled the Sonoma State women's golf team to a third place finish among 15 teams to wrap up the fall season.

Virtusio shot rounds of 73 on Monday and 74 on Tuesday and totaled 28 pars, the second-most in the tournament this week, to mark her third Top 5 finish in three Seawolves' tournaments this fall. Cristina Picariello (79-77--156; +12) and Lexi Nielsen (75-81--156; +12) each tied for 22nd and Samantha Oliva (78-80--158; +14) and Julia Peters (75-83--158; +14) tied for 30th.

As a team, Sonoma State tied with Dixie State with an overall score of 613 (+37), despite firing its best team round of the year, a 301 in Monday's opening round. Cal State San Marcos' B team ran away with the team title, shooting a 594 (+18), followed by the CSUSM A team in second (605; +29). Cal State East Bay finished a close fifth (614; +38).

Sonoma State will break for the winter before returning to action on Feb. 5-6, 2018 at the PLNU Reach 2018 in San Diego.
