head coach Nick Green.
FINAL RESULTS
CHICO, Calif. -- Haley Whitbeck fired rounds of 78 and 75 to score a nine-over-par 153, leading the Sonoma State women's golf team to its first tournament title of 2016-17 with a two-shot victory over host Chico State at this week's InterWest Wildcat Invitational at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico.
Whitbeck finished in a tie for third place with Simon Fraser's Emily Leung, but thanks to a better scorecard on the back nine of Tuesday's final round (Whitbeck shot a two-under 34 while Leung carded a one-under 35), Whitbeck was awarded the third place trophy.
Individually, Whitbeck,
Erin Martens (77-77=154; +10),
Samantha Oliva (79-76=155; +11), and
Sabrina Virtusio (78-78=156; +12) all finished within one stroke of each other to finish in ties for third, fifth, eighth and eleventh, respectively.
Cristina Picariello (83-79=162; +18) tied for 19th. All five Seawolves ended the 36-hole event with three birdies each. Martens was third among tournament participants with 23 pars while Whitbeck recorded 22 pars.
As a team, the Seawolves held off host Chico State by two shots, scoring a 312-306=618 (+42) as the Wildcats finished with a 313-307=620 (+44) for the week. Cal State Monterey Bay (624; +48) came in third place, followed by Point Loma (641; +65), Simon Fraser (645; +69), Holy Names (662; +86) and Northwest Nazarene (671; +95).
Sonoma State will take part in the Otter Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside.
