Women's Golf Places 2nd In Inaugural CCAA Championship

SONOMA, Calif. – The three-day inaugural 2018 CCAA Women's Golf Championship came to a close Wednesday afternoon, seeing the Sonoma State Seawolves lock down a second-place team finish led by the third-place individual finisher, Sabrina Virtusio. The Seawolf junior shot a 74 79 74=229 ( 11), earning her a nomination to the All-Tournament team at Sonoma Golf Club.

"I'm pretty proud of my team, noted Virtusio following Wednesday's awards ceremony. "We started off pretty well despite the bad weather on Monday and even though we didn't play as well on Tuesday, we still made a comeback and showed how we can play."

Monday proved a great opener for the Seawolves, as the hosts commanded a five-stroke advantage through Round One while seeing each of their golfers place within the Top 10 individually. Virtusio sat atop the leaderboard on Monday with a two-over-par 74 and replicated her low score Wednesday.

"I felt pretty confident going into this tournament. I've been practicing pretty hard last week. We know this course, so I put felt pretty good about this tournament."

Despite the much-improved sunny weather Tuesday, the Seawolves were unable to best their Monday marks or keep Jamie Jacob and Cal State San Marcos from shaking up the leaderboard. The Cougars sophomore--who would go on to capture the individual title with a 75 67 78=220 ( 4) score--shot a tournament-best 67 (-5) on Tuesday, catapulting her team 14-strokes past Sonoma State through the first two rounds.

Sonoma State recorded a team-best score of 303 on an overcast Wednesday morning, allowing the Seawolves to wrap up a second place finish with a final score of 922 (306-313-303, 58).

Head Coach Val Verhunce spoke with pride when asked about his team's performance over the three-day Tournament.

"[I'm] extremely proud of the team. They put themselves in position to prove, not only to just themselves but to the conference as well as regional rack committee, that we're a team that belongs in the post-season. So hopefully that will transcend and we'll get the nod to go to Durango here in a couple weeks."

Finishing in the Top 10 alongside Virtusio were sixth-place finisher Samantha Oliva—who shot 74 78 74=229 ( 13)—and Julia Peters who tied for ninth with a 77 78 78=233 ( 17) performance. Jasmine Monas finished 13th with a 78 78 79=235 ( 19) result while Cristina Picariello fell just a stroke behind Monas with a 14th place finish, shooting 78 81 77=236 ( 20) on the day.
