FRESNO, Calif. – In a wild afternoon of water polo, Sonoma State saw their 9-5 lead dissipate in the final 6:03 of play as Fresno Pacific rallied for six goals in the final period, winning the game 11-10 on a buzzer-beater goal.
The Seawolves and the Sunbirds found themselves locked in a strong first-period battle, exchanging goal for goal in the first eight minutes. Each of the two teams' first-period goals were scored by a different player.
Lily Carlon, who scored tied up the game at 3-3 with 19 seconds left in the first, opened the second period with a power play goal at 7:21, assisted by
Taylor Brown. While the Sunbirds responded at 5:17, freshman,
Taylor Brooks, recaptured a one-goal lead for the Seawolves before entering the third period.
Brown,
Cassidy Mundt and JoJo Williams each found the net for Sonoma State in the third period and pushed an 8-5 lead into the fourth. Carlon scored her second of the game to begin the fourth and push the margin to four goals, however the Seawolves were met by a furious comeback from Fresno Pacific. With just 6:03 remaining, Hannah Holly and FPU managed six goals, including two in the final 12 seconds of play. While in the fourth period Williams was able to convert for her second goal of the day, it proved one too few for the Seawolves. Holly, who hit the game tying shot at 0:12, went on to score the buzzer-beating game-winner with a second left to secure the match.
With the loss, the Seawolves finish their regular season 6-18 and 2-5 in WWPA conference play.
