WGOLF: Seawolves Overcome 4-Stroke Deficit and Claim SSU Invitational Championship

SANTA ROSA, CALIF. - From October 4th-5th the Sonoma State women's golf team played host in their very own 2021 Women's Fall Invitational at Valley of the Moon Club in Santa Rosa. In the Seawolves prior two tournaments this fall season, they've recorded a second and fourth place finish and have continued their success from last spring where they won three of their four tournament appearances during the COVID-19 2021 spring season.

Head coach Val Verhunce and his group would tally a 310 team score after the first round of the invitational woth three of the teams starting five recording sub-80 rounds. Lexi Nielsen continues to lead the team as she shot a first round 74, just two over par. Nielsen would record a birdie on the par 5 10th and shoot even par on the back side. Freshman Lauren Garcia continues to make her presence know in her first year of collegiate golf. She would shoot a 77 with two birdie's on the front nine.

Along with their starting five, the Seawolves had six individuals competing in the tournament as well. Courtney Cervellin would lead the way with a 75 3-over performance recording two birdies on the day. With some solid performances and tough pin locations in the first round, the Seawolves found themselves just four strokes back of the surging Cougars of Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars won the RJGA Shootout at Estrella last weekend in Arizona and were at the top of the leaderboard after day one of the SSU Invite.

At the start of day two, both teams started neck and neck as SSU jumped a Menlo College for second place and had their eyes set on the Cougars for the rest of the day. Four Seawolves would shoot sub-80 rounds to help catch the Cougars as SSU would claim the team championship at the end of the day with a team score of 620 (+44), just one stroke below Cal State San Marcos.

Amelia Galdys would shave four strokes off of her first round score as she shot a 79 (+7). Samantha Cabunag would also drop three strokes as she recorded a 76 (+4) including two

birdies on the front nine. Lauren Garcia would be the Seawolves most consistent golfer over the two rounds as she shot a 76 on the final day and with a birdie on 18 she helped the Seawolves claim sole possession of first place.

Jasmine Monas and Samantha Smedshammer each shot 78 in their final round to lead SSU's individuals. Lexi Nielsen, Lauren Garcia, and Samantha Cabunag all finished inside the top-10 individually in the tournament with Nielsen and Garcia earning all-tournament team honors. Sonoma State will travel to Hawaii at the end of the month to compete in their last tournament for the fall season before preparing for the CCAA spring season.
