WGOLF: SSU Runs Away With AAU Invitational Championship

The Sonoma State women's golf team won their second straight team tournament championship of the spring season this week. The Lady Seawolves played in the Academy of Art Invitational at Silverado Golf Club and Resort in Napa Valley.

Rohnert Park, Calif. - On Monday March 29th, the SSU women's golf team returned to competition after their week break in the Academy of Art Invitational at Silverado Golf Club. The Lady Seawolves are coming off of a tournament championship at the NNU Nighthawks Invitational and are in great form heading into the week.

Round 1: The Seawolves found themselves at the top of the leaderboard after day one of the Academy of Art Invitational with a team score of 323. Sophomore Isley Grguric also found herself as the individual leader after the first round posting a 75 (+3). After scoring two doubles and two bogeys on the front nine, Grguric would shoot just 1-under par on the back side and finish 3-over par.

Four Seawolves would finish round one inside the top-10 with veterans Lexi Nielsen and Samantha Cabunag finishing T-5th both shooting 82. Freshman Amelia Gladys made significant contributions in Monday's round as she finished with two birdies on the day and an 85 finish. All five Seawolves posted scores good enough to finish inside the top-12 and secured a 12-stroke lead going into round two on Tuesday eyeing their second straight tournament championship this spring season.

Round 2: With a 12-stroke lead after round one, the Seawolves were looking to put the tournament to bed with a solid team performance and take their second straight team tournament championship. SSU would finish with a team score of 331 after round two, good for the lowest team score of the day. This allowed them to win by an impressive 30 strokes and be crowned the Academy of Art Invitational Team Champions!

Samantha Cabunag and Jasmine Monas would lead the way for SSU. Monas would be the only Seawolf to finish with a sub-80 round as she finished with a 79 (+7). Cabunag would finish with an 81 (+9) and shoot even par on the back side. All five Seawolves would finish in the top-10 individually in the tournament with Cabunag and Monas placing T-2nd. Isley Grguric also placed 5th individually shooting +23 in her two rounds of play. "I was really impressed with the resiliency of our teams this week. We played a tour level golf course in some tour level conditions especially in the second round and we fought to the very end" (HC, Verhunce).

The Seawolves will compete in their first home tournament of the year next week as they play host in the 2021 Sonoma State Spring Invite at the Santa Rosa Country Club. In three tournament appearances this spring, Sonoma State has come away with two team tournament championships and will look to add on to their impressive spring resume on April 5th and 6th.
