GOODYEAR, ARIZ. - On Tuesday September 28th, the Sonoma State women's golf team competed in their final round of the RJGA Shootout at Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona. The Seawolves were 1 of 19 teams in the tournament as they looked to establish themselves as a top program on the west coast. SSU was also one of five CCAA programs to play in the tournament.
After a combined teams core of 301, the Seawolves found themselves in second place out of the 19 teams and were poised for a tournament championship run in round two of the RJGA Shootout. The Seawolves traveled
Amelia Gladys,
Brenna Ozel,
Samantha Cabunag,
Lexi Nielsen and freshman
Lauren Garcia as their five competing golfers. The group came ready to play as four of the five golfers all recorded sub-80 scorecards after the first round on Monday.
Amelia Gladys led the way on the first day for Sonoma State. After recording two bogeys on the front side, Gladys went and recorded three birdies in her final nine holes and brought her score down to even par on the day.
Second year player
Brenna Ozel and veteran
Samantha Cabunag each recorded a birdie in their respective rounds to finish with a 75 on the day. Ozel would finish inside the top-10 after her two rounds of competition.
Despite the solid first round, the Seawolves would fall two spots after the final round on Tuesday and finish 4th out of 19 teams in the field. On day two,
Brenna Ozel would finish as the teams low shooter recording a 74 (+2).
Amelia Gladys would finish just 3-over par while
Samantha Cabunag would follow with a 6-over par performance. The Seawolves had two golfers finish inside the top-10 individually in the two-day tournament and three total inside the top-25.
After an impressive and dominating spring 2021 season, head coach
Val Verhunce seems to have his team in good form once again as they have recorded a second place finish and now a top-5 finish in their two tournaments so far in the fall season. The Seawolves will return home and play host next week in their very own SSU Women's Fall Invite at Valley of the Moon Club in Santa Rosa.
