AIEA, HI. - SSU Women's Golf took the five-hour flight west to Hawaii last weekend to compete in the HPU Sharks Shootout at Pearl Country Club in Honolulu that started on Monday, October 25 and wrapped up Tuesday, October 26. Sonoma State finished 10th of the 16-team field after shaving off 11 strokes as a team from round one.
Freshman Talia Gutman led the way for the Seawolves once again, shooting a first-round five-over-par 77 and a second-round 74. Both were low rounds for the day for SSU. The 74 was not easy to come by though, Gutman bogeyed three of her last eight holes but countered that with three birdies gutting out a two-over round performance. Gutman finished the tournament seven-over-par and tied for 19th, the highest individual finish for Sonoma State.
Sophomore Lauren Garcia was a model of consistency for the Seawolves in a week with harsh playing conditions. Garcia posted a first-round seven-over-par 79 and shaved a stroke off on day two, shooting a 78. During round one, Garcia had two double bogeys to her two birdies, but round two saw nothing higher than a bogey and one birdie.
Junior Brenna Ozel rebounded nicely on day two, shooting a five-over 77 after struggling on day one with a ten-over 82. Junior
Courtney Cervellin also responded well to struggling on day one, posting a six-over-par 78 on day two. Ozel finished the tournament tied for 46th, and Cervellin tied for 43rd. Senior Samantha Smedshammer cut strokes from round one as well, shaving off two and shooting a nine-over-par 81.
Pearl Country Club showed its teeth to the entire field this week with tough scoring conditions and strong winds, it did not make it easy for anyone in the tournament. One team was under par after it was all said and done, and it was CCAA foe Cal State San Marcos who shot five-under as a team and won by an eye-opening 20 strokes.
The Seawolves continue their Hawaiian Island getaway with the Dennis Rose Invitational hosted by Hawaii Hilo at Hapuna Golf Course in Kamuela, Hawaii, from October 28-29th.
