HAYWARD, CALIF. - On Saturday, February 19th, in a jam packed day for SSU athletics, the Sonoma State track & field team competed in their first event in over two years in a dual meet with Cal State East Bay. Out of the 10 participating events, SSU had winners in 8 of them including the 100 meter dash, 400 meter, and the 4x100 meter relay. Some familiar faces from the Seawolves cross country team also made their SSU track & field debut yesterday. Record breaking cross country runner
Alex Boyle made their track & field debut in the 1500 meters and the 4x400 meter relay. They would help SSU to a first place finish in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:22.00, almost 20 seconds faster than the second place finishers. Boyle would also finish second in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:55.32.
In the exciting 100 and 200 meters freshmen
Jeida Lavender and
Makayla Bernadez would dominate as they finished in the top two in both events. Each student-athlete would take first place in the 100 meters of their respective groups but Lavender would barely edge out Bernadez for the top overall spot by just tenths of a second, 13.18 seconds. Both would swap places though in the 200 meters as Bernadez would take the top overall spot over Lavender by a half second, 26.83 seconds.
Freshman
Brittney Glor would continue the recent program success in the shot put where she would take first place by over four feet, 29'5.25''. Versatile participant
Mia Oggenfuss would also compete in the shot put where she would take second place with a mark of 25'4.5''. Oggenfuss would also make her SSU debut in the long jump and finish in the top-5 of that event.
The longest event of the day, the 5000 meters, would also be dominated by Seawolves as
Abby Ribet would take her success from the recent cross country season into the spring track season. Ribet would finish in first place with a time of 19:40.50, over a minute better than the second place finisher. Fellow cross country teammate
Maddy Petersen would place second in the event with a time of 20:48.14. Freshmen
Katie Sheldon and
Sydney Lopes would make their SSU debuts in the 2022 track & field season as they placed first and second in the 400 meters.
The Seawolves now have back-to-back dual meet wins over Cal State East Bay dating back to the 2020 season before the pandemic. Head coach David Lawrence continues to make big strides with both the cross country and track & field programs after a historic fall season. The program will look forward to the Kim Duyst Invitational on March 4th and 5th hosted by Stanislaus State. Live results and stat links can be found at sonomaseawolves.com.
