ALAMEDA, CALIF. – In just his second tournament for the Sonoma State men's golf team, sophomore
Jack Greene turned in a fantastic performance to finish 4
th overall at the Tim Tierney Invitational hosted by Cal State East Bay. Greene shot the best round of the tournament on the final day with a six-under-par 66 to move the Seawolves into 9
th place in the 17-team field.
SSU opened Monday's first round with a 292 and sitting in a tie for 8
th place with Western New Mexico at four-over-par.
Thomas Jenkins Jr. led the way with a two-under-par opening round of 70 while Greene finished one-over-par with a 73.
Lucas Happy and
Aidan Oliver rounded out the Seawolves' scoring with a 74 and 75 respectively. Jenkins poured in three birdies and just one bogey on his way to one of the best scores of the round. Greene meanwhile led the team with six birdies, including four on the front nine.
Greene continued his strong play in Monday's second round, shooting a two-under-par 70, including a stellar 33 on the front nine. Greene birdied the 1
st, 3
rd and 8
th holes on the front before finishing one-over-par on the back with one birdie and two bogeys.
Nick Friedman rebounded nicely in the second to fire a one-over-par 73. Jenkins added four more birdies in his round of 74 and Happy closed out the scoring with a 76 to help the Seawolves to a 293 second round score. The 293 moved the Seawolves back into 10
th place with one round left to play.
Tuesday's final round saw the Seawolves shave nine strokes off their previous round with a four-under-par 284. Greene was flawless in the round, finishing with six birdies and zero bogies including a 32 on the front with four birdies. On the back nine, Greene birdied 14 and 15 to finish with a 66, the best round of the entire tournament. For the tournament, Green shot seven-under-par on the front nine and even on the back.
Oliver saved his best performance for last as well, finishing with a three-under-par 69 on the final 18. Oliver birdied four of the first ten holes and had just one bogey in the entire round. Friedman and Happy rounded out the scoring for Sonoma State with a 74 and 75 respectively.
Greene finished the tournament 4
th overall individually, just two strokes behind tournament winner Liam Allder of Cal State Monterey Bay. Greene's eight-under-par on the final 36 holes was the best of the tournament as well. He also led the entire field with 16 birdies and a five-under-par total on the par 4s.
The Seawolves are off next week before closing out the regular season with their final tune-up before the CCAA Championships with the Stanislaus State Invitational on March 28th-29th.
