BROOKS, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's golf team closed out the CCAA Championship on Wednesday with their second straight round of 307 to finish fifth in the field at Yoche Dehe Golf Course.
Samantha Cabunag raced up the standings over the final two rounds, firing back-to-back rounds of 73 to move from 13
th to 3
rd overall.
Monday's first round saw all teams struggle under fierce wind conditions. The Seawolves finished with a score of 331 and firmly in fifth place. The top score of the day would go to Cal State LA with a 315, placing Sonoma State 16 shots back. Cabuna,
Samantha Smedshammer and
Courtney Cervellin all shot 82 for SSU to put them in a tie for 13
th place thru 18.
The Seawolves responded on Tuesday with 307, cutting their deficit for fourth place down from four to one. Cabunag shot the best round in the field for the day, tying Jasmin Krishna of CSU East Bay with a one-over-par 73. Cabunag finished with four birdies, including three straight on holes 4, 5 and 6.
Lexi Nielsen and Cervellin each added a round of 77 to help SSU close the gap.
Cabunag followed up her second round performance with another one-over-par 73 in Wednesday's final round. She moved all the way up to 3
rd place overall with after starting the day in 5
th place. Cabunag finished the round with three birdies, giving her nine for the tournament, the third most in the field. Cabunag also earned CCAA All-Tournament honors for her performance.
Nielson also shot her way into the top-20 with a 77 in the final round.
Brenna Ozel added her best round of the tournament with a 78 while Smedshammer closed out the scoring with a 79.
Cal State San Marcos ran away with the team title, finishing 18 strokes ahead of Cal State LA. Morgan Sjoerdsma of Cal State LA took home the individual title with a final score of 221.
The Seawolves now await the NCAA Selection Show to see if they are chosen to participate in the NCAA Regionals starting on May 3
rd.
